Body Scan: A Somatic Exercise.

Is there energy pent up in your body? Where is it? What to do with it?

Let’s try a body scan.

First, settle in. There is no rush.

Read this whole thing and then try the scan.

Picture a literal scan. I like to picture myself occupying different spaces. For example, filling up the volume of my head, then my chest, then my stomach.

Start at the top of your head and come down to your chin. Feel around in the space inside of your head.

Move your through your neck and into your chest space. Feel around.

Take a detour from shoulders and down to the fingers.

Back to the chest and torso and into the stomach and womb space.

Bounce around in your tailbones.

Next the thighs, down to the knees. To the shins. Next, the feet. Wiggle your toes.

You have now felt around and scanned your body. When you scanned, where did you get caught up, where did the scan light up?

Find the pent up energy. It can feel like pressure or even just a bit higher energy.

Close your eyes, rest your hands on that part of your body. Breathe steady deep breaths. Explore, feel this space. Be present with it. Ask this area what do you need from me? What would you like me to do?

Listen.

Your body holds lots of answers.

I know this can be a really new and uncomfortable concept. Maybe you and your body haven’t been on speaking terms in a while. Maybe you are angry at or disconnected from her.

The fact that you read this means a lot to her.

If you are finding it difficult to stay connected to your body, this is something we can gently explore in therapy.

We. Love. A. Scan.
